In a move set to boost digital learning and innovation across Nigerian universities, global tech giant Google has announced free access to its premium artificial intelligence platform, Google AI Pro, for students in higher institutions.

The initiative, unveiled yesterday, offers eligible students aged 18 and above a 12-month free subscription to Google’s most advanced AI tools, giving them the opportunity to explore, create, and learn with cutting-edge technology.

Nigeria is among the six African countries benefiting from the offer, alongside Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The programme is powered by Google’s flagship AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, which supports tasks ranging from academic research and coding to creative projects and real-time problem-solving.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, Alex Okosi, said the initiative is aimed at empowering young Nigerians to become active creators in the global tech space rather than mere consumers.

“By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to help them excel in their studies and become the next generation of innovators. This is about democratising access to technology and giving African students, especially Nigerians, the skills to compete and lead globally,” Okosi said.

He added that the free access would help students prepare for an AI-driven world, where digital literacy and innovation are essential skills for success.

Education experts have hailed the development as a “timely breakthrough,” noting that it could help bridge Nigeria’s digital skills gap, stimulate creativity, and enhance productivity in tertiary institutions.
