The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that 85 underage candidates have successfully completed its rigorous screening process and have been cleared for exceptional admission into tertiary institutions across the country.
In a statement released on Monday by its Head of Media and Public Relations, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board disclosed that the 85 candidates, all of whom were below the age of 16 as of September 2025, were adjudged qualified after undergoing a comprehensive, multi-stage evaluation process.
Dr. Benjamin explained that the special admission consideration aligns with international best practices, where exceptional cases are treated as rare exceptions rather than the norm.
According to JAMB, out of 2,031,133 applicants who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), 41,027 candidates sought to be considered under the special underage category. Of these, 599 candidates met the 80% UTME score threshold and were subsequently subjected to further verification, including school certificate and Post-UTME screenings. This process produced 182 finalists, out of which 85 candidates were eventually cleared after interviews and additional scrutiny.
The Board advised any of the 182 finalists who missed the final interview stage to submit a formal request via its support portal.
JAMB further directed candidates who scored 320 and above in the UTME but were disqualified due to failure to upload their O-Level results to do so within two days (not later than Wednesday, October 29, 2025) and notify the Board through the ticketing platform.
Reaffirming its dedication to transparency, inclusiveness, and academic integrity, the Board reiterated that the policy of exceptional admission remains consistent with global best practices.
It would be recalled that on October 16, 2025, JAMB announced that only candidates who would have attained 16 years of age by August 2025 would be eligible for admission into tertiary institutions. The directive, which followed a new Ministry of Education policy adopting 18 years as the minimum age for admission, sparked widespread debate and legal challenge.
Following a court ruling restraining the Board from enforcing the policy, JAMB initiated a special screening process to consider qualified underage candidates under exceptional circumstances.
