The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Offiong Offiong as the institution’s 12th substantive Vice Chancellor. This appointment follows a rigorous selection process conducted by the Council, chaired by Ekpo Udom, on Thursday.

Professor Offiong, a distinguished scholar in coordination and inorganic chemistry, will succeed Professor Florence Obi, whose tenure as Vice Chancellor will officially end on December 1, 2025. As a proud alumnus of the University of Calabar, Professor Offiong obtained his BSc (Hons) in Chemistry in 1984 and Ph.D. in Coordination/Inorganic Chemistry in 1990 from the same institution.

Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Offiong has demonstrated exceptional academic and leadership prowess. He began his academic journey as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Chemistry in 1985 and rose through the ranks to attain the position of Professor in 2002. His academic achievements have been recognized globally, including laboratory research at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and a Certificate in Equipment Maintenance from Bristol Polytechnic, United Kingdom.

As Vice Chancellor, Professor Offiong is expected to leverage his wealth of experience in research, leadership, and academic development to advance UNICAL’s vision and strengthen its global reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
