The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has successfully conducted a trial essay examination in preparation for the full implementation of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates in 2026.

The exercise, which took place on Thursday at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre, Ogba, Lagos, was supervised by the Head of WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut. It featured selected senior secondary school students who participated in a mock assessment combining both objective and essay components in a computer-based setting.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Dangut described the initiative as a major milestone in WAEC’s ongoing digital transformation drive. He explained that the test was designed to familiarize students with the new examination system while bridging technological gaps among schools across the country.

He recalled that the Council began its digital transition with private candidates in 2024 and has since recorded significant progress, paving the way for nationwide adoption by 2026.

“This is a historic moment for us and for the students involved,” he said. “They are the first to attempt a fully computer-based examination that includes both objective and essay sections.”

Dangut further disclosed that while schools with adequate computer facilities would take both components online, those in less developed areas would continue with the traditional essay format until full digital inclusion is achieved.

“Our goal is to ensure inclusiveness and fairness,” he added. “Every student, regardless of location, should be able to write conveniently and confidently.”

He assured that the new system would improve efficiency, transparency, and accessibility, while also strengthening the integrity of WAEC examinations.

Dr. Dangut encouraged students to embrace digital learning, stressing that technology-driven examinations represent the future of education and an essential step toward global competitiveness.
