The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will announce its next steps following a weekend briefing where its negotiation team will present the outcome of recent talks with the Federal Government.

Olujimi Dada, ASUU Chairperson at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), stated that union members are awaiting details of the concluded negotiations and will collectively decide on possible strike action after the briefing. “Members have not been informed about what transpired during the talks. We urge lecturers to remain patient until the weekend,” Dada said.

The union’s one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government expired on Saturday, heightening concerns of a nationwide shutdown of public universities. ASUU has long accused the government of failing to address unresolved issues, including the 2009 agreement, outstanding salaries, earned academic allowances, and revitalisation funding for universities.

Dada expressed hope that the academic calendar would not suffer further disruption. “If the Federal Government had done what we asked, we would not be here,” he added.

The negotiations, which ended Tuesday, will be reviewed by ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC). Meanwhile, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa reiterated the administration’s commitment to industrial harmony, noting President Tinubu’s directive that ASUU must avoid strike action.

ASUU’s decision is awaited amid tensions over longstanding demands. The union urges members to stay alert for the weekend briefing.
