The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced that its organs will convene a meeting today to decide on the next course of action as the ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government over the looming industrial action in public tertiary institutions expires on Saturday (today).

In an interview with Team ™HølÃ¥ INFO in Abuja on Friday, Acting NLC Secretary‑General Benson Upah confirmed the development. The NLC had earlier given the Federal Government a one‑month ultimatum to resolve the ongoing crisis in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education after a meeting with tertiary‑institution‑based unions.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent measures to avert a strike. NANS Assistant Secretary‑General Adejuwon Olatunji‑Emmanuel urged the government to act decisively, noting that Nigerian students have enjoyed an uninterrupted academic calendar since President Bola Tinubu took office—a stability not seen since 1999.

ASUU had suspended a two‑week warning strike on October 22, granting the Federal Government a one‑month window to meet its demands, which include the review of the 2009 ASUU‑Federal Government agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned allowances, and disbursement of the university revitalisation fund. That one‑month window expired yesterday (Friday).

Minister of Education Tunji Alausa said the government has met the union’s demands and reiterated the President’s directive that there should be no strike in public universities. He noted ongoing negotiations and efforts to keep students in school.

The NLC’s upcoming meeting will determine further actions, and stakeholders will be kept informed of any developments.
