The Federal Government has tabled a 40% salary increase proposal for university lecturers as part of renewed negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ™HølÃ¥ INFO gathered on Monday.

The offer was presented to ASUU during a meeting in Abuja, led by former Head of Service, Yayale Ahmed, on behalf of the government. ASUU's National Executive Council (NEC) met on Sunday to review the proposal, directing branch leaders to brief members and paving the way for further discussions next week.

The development comes amid mounting tension following ASUU's one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government, which expired on Saturday. To avert a nationwide university shutdown, government officials held marathon talks with ASUU leadership from Monday into Tuesday, with details kept confidential under strict negotiation guidelines.

ASUU has long accused the government of failing to address key issues, including the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement, unpaid salaries and allowances, and revitalisation funds for federal universities. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed confidence that ongoing discussions will resolve the dispute, citing President Bola Tinubu's directive to maintain academic stability.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its support behind ASUU, warning it will intervene if the government fails to meet its commitments.
