The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has successfully conducted a computer-based promotional examination for 6,000 directorate cadre staff under the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

The examination, which took place on Thursday, was held at the JAMB Computer-Based Test Centre in Kogo, Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, and other locations across the globe, including the United Kingdom, United States of America, India, and Egypt.

Speaking during the exercise, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, described the examination as a bold initiative by the FCSC, aimed at modernizing the civil service assessment system.

"This is a very bold initiative on the part of the Federal Civil Service Commission, and I am not surprised because of its visionary leadership," Oloyede said. "I also believe that people do not need to die before death. The apprehension you could see when people were coming in – as if the computer was something they could not handle – but we have a system that allows alternative routes."

Oloyede commended the FCSC for taking the bold step, saying it would help to reduce apprehension about using computers among civil servants.

The Commissioner representing the FCT and Niger State on the FCSC, Dr. Hussaini Adamu, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the candidates, describing the exercise as excellent.

"The assessment began on Wednesday with about 1,500 participants in three sessions, and I am impressed with the performance of the candidates," Adamu said. "The candidates were initially apprehensive, but after the commencement of the exercise, they were very happy and actually preferred this process compared to the old pen-and-paper system."

The Chairman of the FCSC, Prof. Adetunji Olaopa, described the exercise as a major milestone, saying it was the first time the commission would use a CBT format for promotion examinations.

"It may seem a little progress, but it is significant for us in many ways," Olaopa said. "We know that computer-based tests are already popular, but at least for the Federal Civil Service Commission, this is the first time we are doing this."

Olaopa commended JAMB for its professionalism and expertise in conducting the examination, saying the success of the exercise was a testament to the board's decades of experience.

The FCSC had earlier announced its decision to adopt computer-based testing for promotional examinations for directorate-level officers as part of ongoing reforms to modernize Nigeria's civil service assessment system.
