The Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State, has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run its own degree programmes without needing affiliation to any university. This was announced by the College’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Jibril Abdulrahman, in a statement released on Saturday.
In the statement, Abdulrahman said, “NUC gave the approval on Thursday following a successful resource verification visit by a team of panellists from the Commission.” He added that the panel—comprising renowned professors from various disciplines—assessed the institution’s capacity to deliver on its dual mandate and expressed satisfaction with the college’s human and infrastructural resources to run the programmes satisfactorily.

đđ»The College is now authorized to award its own degrees alongside the existing Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programme.
đđ»Admission into the new degree programmes will commence next week for UTME and direct entry candidates.
đđ»The College previously ran degree programmes in affiliation with the University of Ibadan and Ekiti State University.
The Provost of the College, Dr. Ibrahim Ismaila Mosimabale, described the approval as “epoch-making,” noting it fulfills a long‑time dream of providing higher‑quality education. He thanked the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa CON, for including the college among the fifteen Federal Colleges granted autonomous degree‑awarding status under the new Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023.
The Provost also highlighted that the college has the manpower and infrastructure to sustain these programmes and will begin enrolling students next week.
Deputy Director from the National Universities Commission, Mr. Theophilus Ogber, congratulated the College on this landmark achievement, urging them to “create a renewed vision, chart a clear mission, and draw fresh strategic goals that reflect your new status.”
