The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has called for the unionization of private universities in Nigeria. Speaking on Sunday during The Toyin Falola Interviews Series, Ajaero tasked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to begin the conversation around unionizing private universities.
Ajaero noted that private universities were created to undermine ASUU, adding that efforts must be made to unionize them. He also called for synergy among university unions to harmonize their demands from the government. The NLC President expressed dismay at the government's failure to implement agreements signed with ASUU since 2009, despite the union's efforts to improve the tertiary education system.
ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, emphasized that universities can only have the desired freedom if the staff have adequate facilities to work. He noted that ASUU members are not selfish, but rather committed to improving the tertiary education system, despite enduring intimidation from the government.
Prof. Francis Egbokhare highlighted the ideological problem between the government and ASUU, noting that while ASUU is focused on improving the tertiary education system, the government has a different perspective. He called for ideological convergence to ensure the Nigerian people, particularly students, do not continue to suffer.
