Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt today delivered a judgment sentencing Damian Okoligwe, a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Justina Otuene, a 300-level Biochemistry student of the same institution.

The conviction and sentence stem from the murder of Ms. Otuene on October 20, 2023, at the convict’s residence in Mgbuoba, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The court heard evidence that following the murder, Okoligwe dismembered the victim’s body and was apprehended while attempting to dispose of the remains.

Presiding Judge, Justice Chinwe Nsirim-Nwosu, held that the prosecution successfully proved the three essential ingredients of murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Justice Nsirim-Nwosu characterized Okoligwe’s actions as “intentional, composed, calculated, coordinated and evil,” underscoring the premeditated nature of the crime. She consequently ordered that the convict “be hanged on the neck until he is confirmed dead.”

The verdict was met with relief by the victim's family and the prosecution team.

The prosecution counsel, Charles Mbaba, echoed the sentiment, asserting that justice had been fully served. “Justice has been done and seen and felt to be done in respect of Justina Otuene,” Mbaba said, noting that Justina was her parents' only daughter.

Mbaba further expressed hope that the judgment would bring peace to the soul of Justina and serve as a stern warning to young people. He specifically addressed those who “believe that shortcuts in life are the only means to get rich quick,” suggesting the circumstances of the murder implied ritualistic intent.
The defense counsel declined to comment on the judgment.

The prosecution team confirmed that the verdict ensures accountability for the gruesome act and brings closure to a case that deeply shocked the university community and the state.
