The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the resignation of 30 PhD holders from Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Bauchi State, citing poor pay, neglected welfare, and unpaid salary arrears.

According to Namo Timothy, Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Bauchi Zone, the university administration owes staff over ₦650 million in Earned Academic Allowance and Excess Work Load Allowance dating back to 2012. The union also expressed concern over the absence of pension and death benefit schemes for staff, contrary to standard public service regulations.

The resignations have sparked calls for the Bauchi State government to declare a state of emergency in the university and address the long-standing issues affecting staff welfare and academic excellence. ASUU has warned that industrial harmony cannot be guaranteed unless these issues are resolved.

Key Issues:

👉🏻Unpaid Allowances: Over ₦650 million owed to staff since 2012

👉🏻Lack of Pension and Death Benefits: Contrary to public service regulations

👉🏻Poor Working Conditions: Neglected welfare and inadequate facilities

👉🏻Mismanagement: Allegations of poor governance and resource allocation
