The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is poised to accept a 40% salary increase proposed by the Federal Government, marking a significant step toward resolving years of stalled negotiations over academic staff compensation. According to documents obtained by ™Hølå INFO, ASUU's National Executive Council has deemed the offer the most practical path forward despite not fully addressing all union demands.
The agreement, forged through intense talks on November 24-25, includes:👇🏻
- A 40% salary hike for academic staff.
- 12% of universities' annual salary allocation earmarked for earned academic allowances.
- Review of agreement every 3 years to prevent future disputes.
- Salary adjustments tied to public sector wage increases.
- Merit-based Vice-Chancellor appointments, rejecting host community pressures.
- Protection for lecturers against victimisation in negotiations.
- Universities to operate per laws/statutes, no conflicting circulars
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, affirmed President Bola Tinubu's mandate to avert a strike, keeping students in school. Nigeria Labour Congress backs ASUU, warning intervention if commitments aren't upheld.
ASUU's acceptance, pending member briefings, could end uncertainty for Nigerian public universities amid concerns over unpaid salaries, allowances, and funding.
