The Federal Government has announced plans to formally sign and commence implementation of the long-standing 2009 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) by mid-January 2026. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television's 2025 in Retrospect programme.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed on January 14, 2026, marking a decisive step toward stabilising the university system. Alausa emphasized that the current administration is committed to fulfilling agreements reached with academic unions, stressing that the signing of the 2009 pact would not be symbolic but followed by immediate implementation.

Key highlights of the development include:👇🏻

- Signing of 2009 Agreement: Scheduled for January 14, 2026.

- Immediate Implementation: Expected to reduce industrial actions in public universities.

- 40% Salary Increase: Academic staff to benefit in 2026.

- Infrastructure Development: Funds allocated to critical projects, including lecture theatres, laboratories, and faculty offices.

- Education Sector Funding: Highest budgetary allocation in the country's history over the past two years.

Alausa noted that the government expects the development to significantly reduce industrial actions, ensuring uninterrupted academic calendars and students' academic progression. The minister emphasized that the Tinubu-led administration is determined to ensure that academic programmes are not prolonged by industrial disputes.

The government has invested in constructing and renovating educational facilities, upgrading laboratories, and retaining and retraining teachers through digital platforms. New classrooms and schools are being built across 18 states, with laboratories being upgraded in thousands of schools.
