The Lagos State University (LASU) has issued a stern warning to students, staff, and visitors against producing unauthorised skits, filming, or any form of audiovisual content on its campuses, following a recent prank video that mimicked a bandit attack and caused widespread panic.
In a statement signed by the University's spokesperson, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, LASU expressed concern over the increasing unauthorised use of its campuses for content creation, which often results in offensive, inappropriate, and damaging content that misrepresents the institution's values and image.
"The Lagos State University has observed with concern the increasing unauthorised use of its campuses and facilities for content creation activities, particularly by students. While the university encourages creativity and responsible self-expression, it has become evident that some of the content being produced is offensive, inappropriate, and misrepresents the values and image of the institution," the statement read.
The university noted that the recent prank video, titled "Bandits Prank on Lasuites," which showed individuals dressed as bandits storming the Ojo campus, was a clear example of the kind of content that would no longer be tolerated.
"The episode caused a brief commotion and panic among students and passers-by, and it was only later confirmed to be staged content," the statement added.
To prevent reputational damage and maintain the university's standing as a respected centre of learning and character development, LASU has directed that anyone wishing to engage in filming or cinematographic activities on campus must obtain prior approval from the Centre for Information and Public Relations.
The directive covers skits, vox pops, short films, promotional videos, and any form of audiovisual recording within the university premises, hostels, or adjoining facilities.
Additionally, the use of drones on campus without formal authorisation from the university's security department has been banned, citing safety and privacy concerns.
The management of LASU urged all students, staff, and members of the public to comply with the directive, emphasising that the university would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against anyone found violating the rules.
