The Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has charged 3,272 newly admitted students to take responsibility for shaping their own futures through discipline, innovation, and commitment to learning.

The Vice-Chancellor gave the charge during the 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony for first-year and direct entry students, held on Monday, December 8, 2025. He described the ceremony as the formal commencement of the students' undergraduate training and their official admission into the university's academic community.

Professor Odusanya urged the students to be proactive and future-ready, noting that uncertainty about the future can be reduced by deliberately creating the future one desires. He cited the historic moonshot vision of former United States President John F. Kennedy as an example of purposeful future-building.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the vast opportunities presented by the digital age, particularly the increased access to technology in Nigeria compared to previous decades. He warned the students against social vices such as cultism, indecent dressing, absenteeism, drug abuse, and keeping bad company, stressing that such behaviors are incompatible with a positive and successful future.

He advised the students to be punctual, dedicated to their studies, and to take practical sessions seriously. They were further encouraged to build healthy relationships within the university community, remain in regular contact with their parents, and ensure they are accountable and traceable.

Emphasizing that university education goes beyond the acquisition of certificates, the Vice-Chancellor called on the students to focus on developing market-relevant skills, competencies, and innovative mindsets. He challenged them to think creatively about solving national problems, suggesting innovations such as the production of multipurpose drones, development of new algorithms, and contributions to medical and technological research.

According to him, student success rests on three major pillars: understanding the consequences of one's actions, total commitment to academic work, and looking beyond the degree itself. He noted that while a degree may be a formal qualification, the skills, knowledge, and competencies acquired during training ultimately determine its value.

The Vice-Chancellor also described the matriculation ceremony as a significant milestone for LASUSTECH, noting the institution's rapid growth. He revealed that the university, which had no students at its inception three years ago, now boasts a total student population of over 12,600.

The event marked a new chapter for the matriculating students as they begin their academic journey at LASUSTECH, with expectations clearly set for discipline, innovation, and excellence.
