The National Universities Commission (NUC) has lifted the embargo on the establishment or operation of foreign universities in Nigeria.
This decision, announced by NUC Executive Secretary Professor Abdulahi Yusufu Ribadu at the 10th Convocation ceremony of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, aims to attract foreign direct investment in the education sector and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities.
According to Prof. Ribadu, the partnership will operate under six modes: franchise, branch campus, twinning/articulation, open and distance learning (ODL), acquisition, and teaching institutions.
The NUC has also introduced a code of governance for private universities to ensure uniformity in operations and re-engineered the curriculum from Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) to Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
"NUC adopted a 70:30 NUC:university ratio for curriculum content, providing 70% of minimum core courses and 30% for universities to customize and align with their expertise," Prof. Ribadu said.
The Commission commended Gregory University for its academic strides and emphasized the importance of 21st-century employability skills for graduating students.
