President Bola Tinubu has announced that his administration has initiated a review of the conditions of service and remuneration of university staff across the country. The aim is to align their welfare with current economic realities and improve teaching, research, and learning outcomes in Nigeria's tertiary institutions.
The President made this known at the 49th convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he was represented by a former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Kabir Bala.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration's commitment to dialogue as the most effective means of achieving lasting industrial peace in the nation's university system. He stressed the need for mutual respect and collaboration between the government and university staff to ensure stability in tertiary institutions.
"The Federal Government remains committed to sustained engagement with stakeholders in the university system, noting that dialogue is the surest path to resolving disputes and preventing disruptions in the academic calendar," the President said.
Tinubu disclosed that the government, in collaboration with relevant university staff unions and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, is developing a sustainable framework to review salaries and conditions of service. The proposed framework would reward dedication, innovation, and productivity while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
He urged university staff to continue engaging the government through constructive dialogue, adding that such engagement would ensure universities remain open, stable, conducive, and productive.
The President also noted that the government was expanding opportunities for collaboration among universities, industry, and government.
