The National Universities Commission (NUC) has received €3m as the first installment of a $40 million loan from the French Development Agency (AFD) to support Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) projects in 10 selected Nigerian universities.

Executive Secretary of NUC, Abdullahi Ribadu, announced this during the inaugural meeting of the 13th NUC Board on Wednesday, highlighting the commission’s focus on research, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and skills development over the past year. “We have secured a $40 million loan from AFD for the ICT Blueprint Project in 10 universities. The first tranche of €3m has been deposited in our CBN account to kick-start the process,” Ribadu said.

Ribadu outlined key initiatives, including strengthening financial management, expanding access via new private universities, approving new programs, and advancing quality assurance. “We will rely on the board’s expertise to guide us as we evolve the Nigerian university system,” he added.

NUC Board Chairman, Emeritus Professor Oluremi Aina, emphasized five pillars for the board’s tenure: evaluating NUC’s performance, aligning with Nigeria’s educational priorities, dismantling obstacles to university quality, exploring sustainable funding, and investing in NUC staff welfare and tech infrastructure. “We must lead in resolving academic union issues, enhance digital literacy, and improve global rankings,” Aina said.

The AFD loan, part of the Blueprint-ICT-Dev Project, aims to upgrade digital infrastructure, boost ICT capabilities, and promote digital literacy in federal universities.
