The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has announced the sudden passing of Timilehin Toromade, an 18-year-old Part Three medical student, who reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

According to a statement signed by the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, Toromade, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, possibly died after 2 a.m. on Tuesday. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the family, classmates, and friends of the deceased, describing the incident as "deeply painful and distressing".

The university management assured the public that it is working closely with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and has put in place support measures for affected students and staff.
