The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has warned students involved in hostel racketeering that severe sanctions will be imposed, including suspension ranging from one to two semesters. The Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Musa Obalola, stated that the management is deeply concerned about the activities of students who illegally sell bed spaces and squatting slots within university hostels.

According to Professor Obalola, the practice thrives largely because students occupying official hostels do not pay "economic rent." The university has strengthened monitoring mechanisms, including the issuance of hostel identity cards and random checks by staff.

Sanctions for Hostel Racketeering:👇🏻

- Suspension ranging from one to two semesters.

- Publication of names of students involved in hostel racketeering

Measures to Address Accommodation Challenges:👇🏻

- Introduction of Temporary Hostel Accommodation option (squatting).

- Random allocation of hostel spaces.

- Public-Private Partnership arrangement for construction of new hostels with over 7,000 bed spaces.

Hostel Statistics:👇🏻

- Student population: over 60,000.

- Available bed spaces: 10,599.

- Bed spaces managed by university: 8,211 (5,123 for females, 3,088 for males).

The university has announced another round of hostel balloting for the 2025/2026 academic session, with applications opening on January 6, 2026, for eligible 200 to 500 level students.
