The House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions has officially scheduled a public hearing for February 19, 2026, to address growing grievances regarding the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) recent underage admission policy.

The hearing follows a formal petition submitted by the Movement Against JAMB Injustice 2025, a coalition of affected students, parents, and educational stakeholders.

The group is challenging JAMB's decision to disqualify candidates under the age of 16 from the 2025/2026 academic session, despite their successful participation in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Key Issues Under Review👇🏻

The committee will examine several critical allegations raised by the petitioners, including:👇🏻

🤟Legal Inconsistency: Claims that JAMB’s 16-year age mandate contradicts standing court rulings.
Constitutional

🤟Violations: Arguments that the policy breaches the 1999 Constitution, specifically regarding protection against discrimination and the necessity of judicial compliance.

🤟Retroactive Impact: Concerns over the fairness of enforcing a strict age cutoff (August 31, 2025) on candidates who have already met academic requirements.

Stakeholder Demands
Represented by legal counsel Vincent Adebayo Àdòdó, the petitioners are seeking a legislative intervention to compel JAMB to:👇🏻

🤟Withdraw the age-based restriction for the current admission cycle.

🤟Reinstate the eligibility of all qualified candidates previously sidelined by the policy.

🤟Ensure future policies align strictly with Nigerian constitutional and legal frameworks.

"This hearing represents a pivotal moment for thousands of high-achieving students who find their academic progress stalled by administrative shifts," the group stated in their petition.

The outcome of this February 19 session is expected to set a definitive precedent for tertiary admission eligibility and the limits of JAMB's policy-making authority in Nigeria.
