The Lagos State Government is pleased to announce the appointment of the Alara of Ilara, HRM Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, as the 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).

The appointment was formally approved by the Governor of Lagos State and Visitor to the University, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, in accordance with the powers vested in him by the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended).

The announcement was contained in an official statement released by the University Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu.

Oba Ogunsanwo succeeds the outgoing 5th Chancellor, Professor Gbolahan Elias, SAN, who has successfully completed his tenure of service to the institution.

Key Details of the Appointment:👇🏻

🖐️Effective Date: The five-year tenure officially commenced on February 13, 2026.

🖐️Tenure Structure: In line with university statutes, the appointment is for a single term of five years, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term.

🖐️Legal Framework: The selection follows the rigorous guidelines stipulated in the institution’s governing laws regarding the appointment of principal officers.

The University Management and Governing Council have extended their warmest congratulations to Oba Ogunsanwo. In the official statement, the university expressed immense confidence that the Traditional Ruler’s leadership, wealth of experience, and stature will further elevate the institution's standing as a center of academic excellence.

The University also expressed its profound gratitude to the outgoing Chancellor, Professor Gbolahan Elias, for his dedicated service, visionary leadership, and significant contributions to the university’s growth during his tenure.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made following allegations of disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly during protests related to the strike.
