The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released new guidelines for honorary doctorates in Nigeria, aiming to curb misuse and uphold academic integrity. According to the guidelines, only approved public and private universities can confer honorary doctorate degrees, and institutions must have graduated their first set of PhD students to qualify.

The guidelines also stipulate that:👇🏻

☝🏻Eligibility: Honorary doctorates can only be awarded to individuals with exceptional and sustained contributions.

☝🏻Nomenclature: Degrees must clearly bear the title "Honoris Causa".

☝🏻Process: Nominations must be processed by statutory committees and approved by the University Senate and Governing Council.

☝🏻Limit: A maximum of three honorary doctorate awards per convocation ceremony.

☝🏻Usage: Recipients can use the honorary title after their names but must not use the prefix "Dr.".

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has identified 32 institutions involved in illegal honorary degree awards, including:

☝🏻10 unaccredited foreign universities.

☝🏻4 unlicensed local universities.

☝🏻15 professional bodies with no degree-awarding powers.

☝🏻3 non-degree-awarding institutions.

Some of these institutions are awarding fake professorships and selling honorary doctorates to individuals, including serving public officials.

🔥Consequences include:🔥

🔥Prosecution: Misuse of honorary titles is punishable under various fraud-related laws in Nigeria.

🔥Fines: Institutions and individuals may face fines up to ₦1 million for misrepresentation of qualifications.

🔥Blacklisting: Institutions involved will be banned from operating or associating with Nigerian citizens.

🔥Clampdown: NUC will collaborate with law enforcement agencies to shut down illegal degree mills.

🔥Loss of credibility: Institutions involved risk losing public trust and credibility.

The NUC has also developed a national guideline for awarding and using honorary degrees and plans to approach the National Assembly to push for legislation criminalizing improper award and misuse of honorary doctorates.
