The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed strong opposition to the Federal Government's plan to establish a campus of Coventry University in Nigeria, citing concerns of neocolonialism and advocating for strengthening local institutions.

ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, stated that the agreement signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a recent state visit to the United Kingdom is an attempt to "re-colonise" Nigeria's education sector. Piwuna argued that Coventry University is facing financial challenges, including a £58 million deficit and declining African student enrolment, and questioned the rationale behind allowing a foreign university to operate in the country.

The union insists that the government should prioritize revitalizing existing public universities, addressing issues such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and unresolved welfare concerns. ASUU has vowed to resist the implementation of the agreement, warning that it would divert attention and resources away from local institutions.
