The Nigerian government has announced strict new education rules, making compliance with the National Education Repository and Databank (NERD) mandatory for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation. According to President Bola Tinubu, no Nigerian graduate will be allowed to join NYSC or get an exemption letter without proof of NERD compliance, effective October 6, 2025.

This new rule aims to curb certificate fraud, safeguard intellectual property, and strengthen quality assurance in higher education. Graduates are required to upload their school projects, thesis, or final-year research work to NERD as proof of academic authenticity.

The NERD policy applies to all Nigerian graduates, whether from local universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, or overseas institutions. The government has also approved an academic output monetisation and reward mechanism for students and lecturers.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made following allegations of disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly during protests related to the strike. The Commissioner of Police stated that the command is committed to maintaining law and order and will ensure that all parties operate within the confines of the law.
