A Federal High Court in Calabar has ruled against the University of Calabar (UNICAL), ordering the institution to pay ₦55 million to eight engineering students, collectively known as the "UNICAL 8", for unlawful and deceptive actions. The court found UNICAL guilty of admitting students into an unaccredited engineering programme, causing them psychological distress and academic setback.
Justice R. O. Dugbo-Oghoghorie declared the university's actions illegal, fraudulent, and reckless, emphasizing that institutions must disclose programme accreditation status to prospective students. The court awarded ₦50 million in general damages and ₦5.247 million in special damages to the plaintiffs.
The controversy began in 2021 when over 200 engineering students were demoted, sparking outrage and legal action. UNICAL secured full accreditation for the programme in the 2024/2025 session, after the affected students were expected to graduate.
The university's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eyo Eyo, stated that the institution would issue a formal response to the judgment.
