The Federal Government has announced a six-year moratorium on the approval of new private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria. The decision was reached during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), where several major reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s education sector were approved.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, explained that the suspension is intended to consolidate and strengthen the capacity of existing tertiary institutions, particularly private universities. He noted that although the demand for higher education in Nigeria continues to rise, many institutions currently face serious financial and structural sustainability challenges.

According to data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), over 2.3 million candidates applied for university admission last year, while public universities were only able to admit fewer than 228,000 students. The minister emphasized that government priority should now focus on improving quality, infrastructure, and long-term institutional viability, rather than increasing the number of institutions.

He reaffirmed that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to raising educational standards nationwide, ensuring that Nigerian students benefit from learning environments that meet global best practices.

In another significant development, FEC also approved the restoration of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education as a fully independent commission. The move is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to combat Nigeria’s high illiteracy rate and promote digital literacy among young adults.

The minister revealed that Nigeria currently has an estimated 56 million non-literate citizens, a figure he described as unacceptable for a nation striving for rapid socio-economic development. To address this challenge, the government plans to equip more than 50 million young Nigerians with literacy and digital skills in the coming years.

Additionally, the Council approved amendments to the Act establishing the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, which will recognise medical fellowship qualifications as equivalent to doctoral (PhD) degrees.

The minister explained that this reform aims to remove long-standing professional barriers faced by medical specialists, who often undergo years of rigorous training, residency, and fellowship programmes but still require PhDs to qualify for academic professorships. Once the proposed executive bill receives approval from the National Assembly, medical fellows will have their qualifications officially recognised as equivalent to a PhD.
