The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s International Workers’ Day celebration.

The Honourable Minister of Interior, on behalf of the Federal Government, made the declaration and congratulated Nigerian workers for their resilience, hard work, and commitment to national development.

The Minister urged workers to continue to support the present administration’s efforts at building a more productive and prosperous Nigeria, emphasizing the dignity of labour and the role of workers in driving economic growth.

Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving workers’ welfare, enhancing industrial harmony, and creating a conducive environment for increased productivity.

All Ministries, Departments and Agencies, banks, schools, and private sector organizations are to observe the holiday. Essential service providers are expected to maintain skeletal services during the period.

The Federal Government wishes all Nigerian workers a peaceful and fulfilling Workers’ Day celebration.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made following allegations of disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly during protests related to the strike. The Commissioner of Police stated that the command is committed to maintaining law and order and will ensure that all parties operate within the confines of the law.
