The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the reported abduction of several Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates and other commuters by suspected gunmen along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway in the early hours of Wednesday, April 16, 2026.

Details of the Incident: 👇🏻

1. Occurrence: Preliminary reports indicate that armed assailants intercepted a commercial vehicle conveying UTME candidates en route to their examination centre, as well as other travelers, at approximately 6:45am near Jere axis.  

2. Victims: The exact number of abducted persons is yet to be ascertained. JAMB has been contacted to verify the identities of affected UTME candidates. 

3. Response: The Inspector-General of Police has directed the immediate deployment of the Police Tactical Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and aerial surveillance teams to the area. Joint operations with the military and other security agencies have commenced to ensure the safe rescue of all victims.  

4. JAMB Advisory: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has urged candidates and parents to remain calm and avoid late-night or early-morning travel to examination centres. JAMB will reschedule examinations for affected candidates at no cost.

The Force Public Relations Officer stated: “We condemn this cowardly attack on young Nigerians seeking education. All tactical resources have been mobilized to rescue the victims unhurt and apprehend the perpetrators. We urge the public to disregard rumours and rely only on verified information from security agencies.”

Parents and guardians of candidates traveling for UTME are advised to use designated JAMB transport arrangements where available and report suspicious movements to the nearest police station or via the NPF emergency numbers: 080-99-012-999, 112.

Investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as events unfold.
