The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced a 72-hour boycott of all academic activities in protest against the worsening transportation challenges on campus.

The decision follows a Students’ Union Congress held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, where students expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current transport system and the Union leadership’s handling of the crisis.

Background of the Crisis👇🏻

Students, particularly those residing off-campus, have faced severe difficulties commuting to lectures due to bus scarcity, long queues, and recent fare hikes. Negotiations between the Students’ Union Transport Management Commission and the Ife branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over reducing fares on the Campus Gate to Bus Stop route ended in deadlock, with NURTW rejecting a return to ₦100 and hinting at an increase to ₦200.

The situation has been worsened by alleged non-compliance by some commercial drivers following the university’s announcement of a new transport system powered by 80 vehicles donated by the First Lady, including 50 CNG buses and 30 tricycles. Despite the delivery of these vehicles, students report no improvement, with many still trekking or waiting up to an hour for shuttles.

Students’ Demands👇🏻

1. Immediate deployment and regulation of the 80 new CNG/electric vehicles to ease movement across campus and major off-campus routes.

2. A reversal of arbitrary fare hikes by commercial operators and enforcement of student-friendly pricing.

3. Direct accountability and timely communication from the Students’ Union and University Management on transport reforms.

4. A sustainable, affordable, and student-centred transportation framework to prevent recurrence.

The Union noted that the crisis has forced many students to skip classes, sleep on campus overnight to avoid missing early lectures, and bear increased financial burdens due to high transport costs.

The Union reiterated its commitment to the “aluta principles” of Consultation, Consolidation, and Confrontation, while urging the university management to expedite the rollout of the promised transport system.
