The Federal Government has announced plans to scrap the Junior Secondary School, JSS, and Senior Secondary School, SSS, separation policy, citing the dropout of an estimated 20 million pupils as a major concern. 

According to Team Hølå INFO Media, the proposed policy shift is aimed at improving access to education and strengthening learning outcomes across the country. 

The Ministry of Education said the current JSS and SSS structure has contributed to barriers that prevent many pupils from completing their secondary education. Merging or removing the division, it stated, will create a more continuous and supportive learning path. 

“The 20 million dropout figure is unacceptable. We must restructure to ensure more children stay in school and achieve better results,” a senior official said. 

Stakeholders in the education sector are expected to be consulted as the government finalises modalities for the implementation of the new framework. 

Further details on the timeline and operational plan will be released after consultations are concluded.
