The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, has confirmed that a technical glitch and ongoing portal reconciliation issues have delayed the disbursement of monthly upkeep allowances to beneficiaries of the Federal Government student loan scheme.

The clarification was made by the Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. He stated that the delay followed a routine reconciliation exercise conducted at the end of the 2024/2025 academic session.

According to the Fund, the reconciliation revealed outstanding upkeep payments amounting to N927.98 million affecting 11,685 students nationwide. NELFUND clarified that the delay was not caused by withheld funds or policy failure.

“The outstanding payments were uncovered following routine reconciliation. The delays are the result of technical and operational challenges, including temporary network downtime, failed transactions, and difficulties validating some students’ bank account details,” Sawyerr explained.

He added that the Fund has approved a one-time, focused reconciliation process to resolve all outstanding cases. The process will involve direct engagement with affected students, a grace period for updating bank details, and multi-layer validation by NELFUND’s IT, client support, audit and finance teams.

The delay has sparked concerns among beneficiaries who rely on the stipends for basic living expenses, with the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, saying it received numerous complaints about upkeep allowances being on hold for about two months.

NELFUND reassured students and the public that payments will be made promptly once verification is completed, and urged beneficiaries to disregard false reports circulating on social media alleging suspension of the allowance scheme.

The Fund reiterated its commitment to transparency, efficiency and timely disbursement of both tuition and upkeep allowances under the student loan scheme.
