The Federal Government has expressed concern over Nigeria’s literacy levels, revealing that three out of every four Nigerian children cannot read by the age of 10. 

The alarming statistics were disclosed as part of efforts to address the country’s growing learning crisis. The government described the situation as urgent and in need of immediate intervention. 

To tackle the challenge, the FG said it will accelerate the adoption of digital learning across basic schools. Officials noted that technology-driven instruction can improve reading proficiency, close learning gaps, and support teachers in underserved areas. 

“The data shows that 75 percent of our children are not meeting basic reading benchmarks by age 10. We must change our approach, and digital tools are central to that change,” a Ministry of Education representative stated. 

The government added that it will work with state governments, development partners, and education stakeholders to expand access to digital resources and teacher training nationwide. 

Further implementation details are expected to be rolled out in the coming months.
