The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt has appointed Professor Princewill Chike as the institution’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.

Prof. Chike, a renowned public health expert and former Rivers State Commissioner for Health, takes over the leadership of the 50-year-old university following the completion of due process for the selection of a new chief executive.

The appointment was announced by the Council on Thursday after ratifying the report of the Selection Board set up to fill the vacant position.

Until his appointment, Prof. Chike served as Rivers State Commissioner for Health, where he was credited with strengthening the state’s healthcare system and leading responses to public health emergencies.

A Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and a Professor of Public Health, he brings to the role decades of experience in academia, healthcare administration, and policy.

The Governing Council expressed confidence that Prof. Chike’s track record in service delivery and strategic leadership will advance UNIPORT’s mandate of teaching, research, and community service.

He succeeds the outgoing Vice-Chancellor and is expected to assume office in line with the university’s transition guidelines.
