President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, to the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa.
The approval was conveyed in a letter signed by the Honourable Minister of Education.
According to the Hølå INFO, the upgrade underscores the President’s commitment to strengthening technical and vocational education, developing critical human capital, and unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The new university will focus on specialised programmes in mining, geology, metallurgy, engineering, and related fields that are vital to Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.
“The Federal Government is determined to build institutions that will produce the manpower needed to drive industrialisation and make Nigeria a global player in the mining industry,” the statement read.
President Tinubu directed the National Universities Commission, NUC, to commence immediate processes for the take-off of academic activities at the new university, including resource verification, curriculum development, and appointment of a pioneer management team.
The President also assured that adequate funding and infrastructure support will be provided to position the institution as a centre of excellence for mining and engineering research.
Stakeholders, including the Nasarawa State Government, traditional rulers, and host communities, have lauded the decision, describing it as a landmark development that will create jobs, boost research, and attract investments to the state.
The Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, established in 1983, will now transition its assets, staff, and academic programmes to the new university structure.
