The National Universities Commission, NUC, has granted approval to Wellspring University, Benin City, to commence five new undergraduate programmes in the health sciences, effective from the 2026/2027 academic session.
In a letter signed by the Acting Executive Secretary of NUC and made available to newsmen on Tuesday, the Commission said the approval followed a resource verification exercise carried out at the university.
The newly approved programmes include👇🏻
Medicine and Surgery, MBBS; Nursing Science; Medical Laboratory Science; Public Health; and Physiotherapy.
According to Team Hølå INFO Media, the approval brings to bear the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to quality health education and addressing the shortage of medical personnel in the country.
The Vice Chancellor of Wellspring University, Prof. Isaac Omolehin, described the development as a major milestone for the institution. He said the university has put in place modern laboratories, a teaching hospital partnership, and qualified faculty to deliver the programmes.
“We are grateful to the NUC for this approval. It is a testament to our commitment to academic excellence and to producing health professionals who will serve Nigeria and beyond,” he said.
The university disclosed that admission into the new programmes will commence through JAMB and Direct Entry for the 2026/2027 academic session.
NUC urged the institution to maintain the standards that informed the approval and to submit regular reports on the progress of the programmes.
