The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board [JAMB], Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has reiterated that the Board should not be classified as an examination body.
Speaking at an official engagement in Abuja, Prof. Oloyede said JAMB’s statutory responsibility is that of an educational assessment and admission agency, with its core mandate centred on conducting unified tertiary admissions and coordinating placement into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
According to the Registrar, the misconception that JAMB is an “exam body” has continued to distort public understanding of the agency’s functions. He stressed that while the Board administers the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination [UTME] as an assessment tool, its primary role goes beyond examination administration to include regulation, data management, and admission policy coordination.
“JAMB is not an examination body. We are an educational assessment and admission agency. That is our core mandate,” Oloyede insisted.
He further noted that the clarification is critical to aligning expectations of stakeholders, parents, and candidates with the legal and operational framework guiding the Board’s activities.
